Hiking and nature

Kandy is surrounded by mountain ranges, pockets of forest, stretches of rivers and unexpected streams. On the doorstep of Kandy Cottage is the Udawattakale Forest and Bird Sanctuary; the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens and the Hantana mountain range (perfect for hiking!) are a 15-minute drive from the cottage. Nuwara Eliya and Haputale are a 2-hour drive, and Horton Plains (a National Park of montane grassland and cloud forest, and home to many endemic species of Sri Lanka) is a 2-3 hour drive from the cottage.

History and archaeology

A 2-hour drive from the cottage takes you to the UNESCO world heritage sites of Sigiriya (an ancient rock fortress dating from 5CE), the cave temples of Dambulla (dating from 1 BCE onwards), and the Ibbankatuwa megalithic tombs (750-400 BCE).

Cricket fans will not be disappointed, as the impressive Asgiriya International Cricket Stadium is only a 15-minute walk from the cottage. For Rugby fans, the Nittawella and Bogambara grounds are a 10-minute drive from the cottage.

Special interest

The Kandy Esala Perahera takes place in July/ August each year, and is a fantastic 7-day festival, with parades of elephants, drummers, dancers and dignitaries. Viewing points in the town centre are only a 15-minute walk from the cottage.
